Whether you are looking to spend some leisurely time exploring the outdoors or want a more intense wilderness experience, there is something for everyone on Vancouver Island.
CATHEDRAL GROVE. Cathedral Grove is located in MacMillan Provincial Park, and consists of 136 hectares of old growth forest located between Parksville and Port Alberni, BC. Cathedral Grove features trails located on either side of the highway that meander through ancient Douglas Firs and Red Cedar, some up to 9 meters around. The trails on the left side of the highway lead to the shores of Cameron Lake on Vancouver Island.
HATLEY PARK. Hatley Park is located in the community of Colwood about 25 minutes from Victoria in the Capital Region. This 565 acre estate features Hatley Castle built by John Dunsmuir in 1908. Take a stroll around the grounds, eat lunch at the Habitat Cafe or take a tour of the castle itself. When vacationing on Vancouver Island you can include several attractions in one day!
STRATHCONA PARK. Strathcona is a BC Provincial Park consisting of 250,000 hectares of wilderness located in the central region of Vancouver Island. It features Delta Falls, one of the top 10 highest falls in the world, Golden Hinde peak, the highest point on Vancouver Island as well as Buttle Lake, great for fishing and camping. A good park for those seeking a wilderness experience, Strathcona Provincial Park has many hiking trails ranging from day trips to glacial lakes to hikes that are several days long and suitable for experienced and fit hikers only. Vancouver Island hiking trails are diverse and scenic.
PACIFIC RIM NATIONAL PARK. Pacific Rim National Park is located on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island and covers 49,962 hectares of coast and ocean. A rugged and wild park in many places it boasts the famous West Coast Trail as well as many beautiful Vancouver Island beaches and communities.
MAQUINNA PROVINCIAL PARK. Maquinna Provincial Park is 2,667 hectares located on the east coast of Hesquiat Harbour about 40 km from Tofino. Its main attraction is Hot Springs Cove, a cascading waterfall of hot mineral springs that collects in about 6 different pools. The pools become progressively cooler the lower you go as cool ocean water begins to mix with the heated mineral water. This Vancouver Island park is also great for ocean kayaking, hiking and wilderness camping. Vancouver Island attractions and parks will keep your family active and healthy.
